I hope your 2016-17 school year is off to a wonderful start! You can click on the following link for more information about Buncombe County's AIG services and curriculum, screening and referral processes, or identification criteria.
Our 4th and 5th grade AIG groups will begin meeting in the second full week of school, and new nominations will be accepted over the next few weeks. We expect the 3rd grade CogAT (aptitude screening) to be administered at the end of September/early October, and this will begin the screening and nomination process for third graders. I have begun scheduling times for 1st and 2nd grade Problem Solver groups, but will not meet with these students until after the initial round of mClass assessments have been completed at the end of September.
A New AIG plan for 2016!
Last year the AIG staff worked on updating the county AIG plan, which was approved by the school board over the summer. The new plan is posted on the Buncombe County website - click here to link. .
Third, fourth and fifth graders in the AIG program should expect to have weekly homework assignments. However, these assignments are optional, because the AIG program is not intended to make the students do more/extra work. Usually, homework will be fun and engaging puzzles or brain teasers, so that kids will want to complete the assignments. I encourage them to share the work with their families, so feel free to work on it together. As an added incentive, students will also earn stars in our reward system for completing assignments.
Students will be assessed on classwork and you will receive updates regarding your student’s progress in these areas at the end of each nine week marking period. If you have any questions or concerns in the meantime, or if you would like to schedule a conference, please do not hesitate to contact me.
