Long Term Goals

Major Clusters Supporting/Additional Clusters Number and Operations in Base Ten ●Understand the place value system. ●Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths.   Number and Operations—Fractions ●Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions. ●Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions.   Measurement and Data ●Geometric measurement: understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition. Operations and Algebraic Thinking ●Write and interpret numerical expressions. ●Analyze patterns and relationships.   Measurement and Data ●Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system. ●Represent and interpret data.   Geometry ●Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems. ●Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties.

Fifth Grade Science Units

Unit Focus Structures and Functions of Living Organisms (Human Body Systems) and Genetics Students will be learning about: ●Cells- Unicellular and Multicellular Organisms ●Functions and organs of the Human Body Systems including the Respiratory, Circulatory, Digestive, Muscular, Skeletal and Nervous Systems. ●Inherited and acquired (learned) traits Matter: Properties and Change Students will be learning about: ●Conservation of Mass- learning about properties of matter, mass, matter and volume of solids. ●Physical and Chemical changes Energy: Conservation and Transver Students will be learning about: ●Three ways heat is transferred: convection, conduction and radiation. ●Water Cycle- the different phases of the water cycle Earth Systems, Structures and Processes (Weather) Students will be learning about: ●Daily and Seasonal Changes in weather- throughout the year. ●Predicting weather using weather instruments as well as online resources and reading weather maps. ●Understanding fronts and how they effect our weather. ●Understanding high and low pressure systems ●Global weather patterns: The Jet Stream, The Gulf Stream, El Nino, La Nina Ecosystems Students will be learning about: ●Various terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. ●Interactions between organisms and their environments. ●Food Chains and Food Webs and the flow of energy in an ecosystem Force and Motion Students will be learning about: ●Predicting motion due to gravity, friction, and mass. ●Velocity ●Graphing Motion and understanding motion of an object by analyzing a graph.

Focus Reading This year students will be practicing to read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it. Students will cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from both Fiction and Nonfiction texts. Writing ●Students will write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.   ●Students will produce clear and coherent narratives, opinion writings and informational texts in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
